Zamora Company: Building a conscious company and reducing plastic use with centralized sustainability data
Less nonreusable packaging to help create a better world
As a family business with a deep connection to the land through its vineyards and wineries, Zamora Company knows today’s actions will help build its future legacy. With the SAP Responsible Design and Production solution, the company has created one source of sustainability information, enabling it to act in a responsible and sustainable way every day.

Innovating to support sustainable operations and new packaging laws
You may not have heard of Zamora Company, but you’re likely familiar with its premium spirit and wine brands, which include Licor 43, Martin Miller’s Gin, Yellow Rose, Ramón Bilbao, and Champagne Pommery. Headquartered in Spain and with operations in more than 80 countries, Zamora Company has safeguarding the environment in its DNA. Its commitment to the planet is based on the four pillars of climate action, biodiversity protection, circularity, and conscious suppliers. The company has also aligned its strategy as a conscious company with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
To support a sustainable business model and the circular economy, Zamora Company wanted to increase its use of recycled product and packaging materials and to collaborate with suppliers to help them use more sustainable packaging too. This drive occurred against the backdrop of a new tax on nonreusable plastic packaging introduced in Spain in January 2023. The tax, which aims to include the environmental cost of the manufacture and consumption of such packaging in the price of final products, applies to the manufacture, import, or intra-EU acquisition of this packaging in the Spanish market.
Enrique Gonzalo Mecández, Zamora Company’s SAP operations manager, explains, “The new legislation required us to respond to governmental requisitions and was an additional driver to accelerate our sustainability efforts. With a crossdepartmental team, we were looking for the most appropriate and scalable software solution to help us with data management, tax monitoring, and reporting and insights to meet the country’s regulatory requirements.”

Harmonizing sustainability data in the cloud for greater transparency
Zamora Company realized SAP Responsible Design and Production, an industry cloud solution, would meet its needs. The solution lets manufacturers and retailers calculate extended producer responsibility (EPR) obligations and fees, plastic taxes, and corporate commitments to help them make the right material choices. It also supports better design decisions based on both costs and planetary impact.
The wine and spirits producer knew SAP Responsible Design and Production would enable it to learn more about its products and their packaging makeup and exactly how much plastic and nonrecycled plastic they contain. The solution would also support a longer-term strategy to evaluate alternative materials and their composition.
Meanwhile, the company’s SAP S/4HANA software would facilitate an integrated platform to help consolidate information on material characteristics.
During the implementation project, SAP partner Minsait offered a high degree of specialization and knowledge of digital transformation and IT. Gonzalo Mecández says, “With deep knowledge and solution experience, our trusted partner Minsait, an Indra company, greatly supported us during implementation of SAP Responsible Design and Production, as well as during integration with our platform based on SAP S/4HANA.”
Enhancing procurement processes and sustainability reporting
Having implemented SAP Responsible Design and Production, Zamora Company now benefits from smoother procurement processes and reduced workloads, with manual inputs replaced by automatic sourcing of sustainability data.
“From a process standpoint, SAP Responsible Design and Production means sustainability data is linked to materials and unified in material master data,” Gonzalo Mecández says. “As all information is kept in one place, the purchasing work and master data maintenance required to ensure regulatory compliance are centralized without the need to manually replicate information in different systems.”
Costs are lower thanks to less administrative work, easier reporting, and the efficiencies enabled by a centralized data repository.
Data is also more accurate and fully aligned with material registration processes. “A single and integrated platform using SAP S/4HANA provides the security of working with up-to-date and correct data. Additionally, the data quality application allows our users to detect any missing information and correct it,” Gonzalo Mecández says.
And, of course, SAP Responsible Design and Production plays a key role in helping Zamora Company realize its sustainability goals. Intuitive, user-friendly tools support timely legal reporting, and there is a reduced risk of noncompliance with Spanish EPR regulations. In addition, the company can nimbly extend the solution to help it meet upcoming EPR legislation in other countries.
As Gonzalo Mecández elaborates, “The project has helped us learn more about our products and their packaging details so we know exactly how much plastic and nonrecycled plastic is being used. In a more strategic phase, this will allow us to evaluate alternative materials and compositions that can create cost savings for the company and positively contribute to the environment by helping us transition to more sustainable elements.”
