Unifying fragmented IT systems for data to flow in the right direction
In 2019, a consortium of Assam Gas Company Ltd., Oil India Ltd., and GAIL Gas Ltd. was created as a result of bidding conducted by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) for two geographical areas (GAs) comprising five districts in Assam, India. After winning the bid, the three entities were incorporated as joint venture company Purba Bharati Gas Pvt. Ltd. (PBGPL).
PBGPL’s mission is to build, operate, and expand on City Gas Distribution projects in the state of Assam. But this new enterprise also had a big technology landscape challenge: centralizing three separate operations for its newly formed joint venture company.
Data accuracy was a critical issue due to a lack of standardization. PBGPL’s business processes were often inconsistent and manual, relying on multiple phone calls, complex paper trails, and labor-intensive exercises. Without a real-time centralized data platform, there were frequent mismatches in purchase order availability, incorrect material reconciliation, and manual stock counts.
Budget was also a major factor in unifying the joint venture’s separate operations. PBGPL was committed to not only ensuring that initial capital expenditures and ongoing operating expenses were the most cost-effective, but also selecting the highest-quality solution.
Flexibility and scalability were also key priorities, since PBGPL would be growing its customer base in the future.
With all these technology challenges to overcome, it was a tall order to fill.
