Leading the automotive industry in climate action
Founded in 1985, Martur Fompak International has grown to become one of the world’s leading automotive suppliers. With 30 production plants in seven countries, the company designs and manufactures car seat systems, interiors, and textiles and has a customer list that includes the world’s top automotive OEMs.
Committed to running environmentally friendly operations, Martur Fompak wanted to integrate sustainability principles into its core business processes. To achieve this, the automotive supplier needed to be able to quickly make carbon footprint calculations across its supply chain, analyzing each component, raw material, and activity for its climate impact. It then needed to make carbon footprint information easily accessible to employees and customers, providing them with the information they need to make greener decisions that result in lower carbon emissions.

Using AI to unite ERP and sustainability data for smarter business
The company looked to the latest technology to take its sustainability efforts to the next level. As the cornerstone of this initiative, Martur Fompak deployed SAP Sustainability Footprint Management, taking just a few days to integrate the solution with SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition. This ERP integration meant that the company could track its carbon footprint across core business processes.
SAP Sustainability Footprint Management also played a key role in a groundbreaking sustainable cockpit customization project. This involved the development of an innovative solution that allows internal design teams and customers to personalize vehicle cockpit elements such as seats, door panels, and dashboards. With a mobile app created in days using the low-code SAP Build Apps development environment, users can upload images of desired fabrics. Next, using SAP Business AI offerings including the SAP AI Core infrastructure and SAP AI Launchpad, the app suggests matching fabrics from Martur Fompak’s catalog with sustainable alternatives to standard components. After making their selection, users can then view their cockpit in a virtual reality “metaverse.” Here, they can understand the environmental impact of each component thanks to carbon footprint analysis conducted by SAP Sustainability Footprint Management.
Another area where Martur Fompak uses SAP Sustainability Footprint Management is the real-time monitoring of the carbon footprint of energy consumption thanks to integration of the solution with 620 work centers and 100 energy analyzers. In addition, integration between SAP Sustainability Footprint Management and the SAP Transportation Management application helps the company optimize regular delivery routes to minimize carbon emissions.

Protecting the environment by making sustainable choices
Initial impacts of the use of SAP Sustainability Footprint Management by Martur Fompak are striking. With the reimagined cockpit customization process, the company has decreased carbon emissions by car seat by more than a third. Meanwhile, integration between the solution and SAP Transportation Management has helped the automotive supplier cut transportation emissions by more than half, significantly reducing Scope 3 emissions overall.
Detailed analytical reporting in SAP Sustainability Footprint Management enables employees and senior executives to quickly access and share up-to-date sustainability information, allowing them to build sustainability considerations into day-to-day decision-making. For example, tracking carbon emissions across the product lifecycle has led to the use of green steel for the seat frames and an increase in renewable energy in production processes.
Running carbon footprint calculations in SAP Sustainability Footprint Management is more than 50 times faster than calculating emissions manually. What’s more, thanks to integration between the solution and SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, collecting sustainability data is 75 times faster than the spreadsheet-based processes used previously. This is helping Martur Fompak respond to sustainability challenges in a more agile way while freeing employees’ time to focus on sustainability strategy rather than crunching numbers.
Steering the automotive industry toward a more sustainable future
Thanks to its deployment of SAP Sustainability Footprint Management, Martur Fompak can now track emissions associated with its products throughout their lifecycle – from raw materials to delivery to customers. Through this achievement, the company is two years early in meeting the standards required by new sustainability regulations due to come in 2026.
In the meantime, Martur Fompak continues to build on its trailblazing work in integrating sustainability data with cloud ERP business processes. It’s currently using the SAP Signavio Process Insights solution to analyze existing sustainability-related processes and identify areas for future optimization.
In promoting sustainable business in this way, the automotive supplier is aligned with OEM customers that increasingly consider the reduction of carbon emissions a key priority. However, the company’s ambition goes beyond satisfying customers by providing the information they need to make more-sustainable choices. Ultimately, Martur Fompak believes that its new AI-based approach to sustainable decision-making will trigger a change across the automotive industry, enabling vehicle manufacturers to offer low-carbon options that don’t cost the earth.
