An AI copilot is a virtual assistant that uses a conversational interface to help users of business applications complete tasks more efficiently. Copilots use generative AI and other technologies to understand user requests, perform actions, and provide insights based on business data. Compared to earlier digital assistants, AI copilots provide a more human-like conversational experience and a broader and more flexible range of capabilities.

Joule uses AI to respond to the intent of user questions and requests expressed in natural language. Joule determines how to respond by combining the user’s intent with rich context about their business role and the SAP applications and data that run business processes. Joule completes tasks, returns insights, and summarizes information using generative AI.

Joule is a key capability in SAP cloud business applications. Depending on your software landscape, Joule may act as your employees‘ main AI copilot or work alongside other copilots that they currently use. Joule will integrate with Copilot for Microsoft 365 later this year, allowing each copilot to access the unique capabilities of the other to address user requests. Learn more about the integration between Joule and Microsoft Copilot.

As with all SAP AI solutions, Joule upholds the highest ethical, security, and privacy standards. For generative AI, we leverage enterprise-grade large language models (LLMs) from trusted partners who provide guarantees that no LLM will use your data to train or improve their foundation models. Joule bases its response on your SAP business data, which helps to reduce AI hallucinations and deliver reliable answers and insights. Joule follows SAP’s general multi-partner strategy for generative AI. and may employ a variety of foundation models to deliver the best performance for each use case. This multi-partner strategy ensures you can benefit from the latest and most relevant innovations in the rapidly advancing generative AI field.

The ability to extend and customize Joule is planned for a future release in 2025. Joule already includes many business capabilities out of the box. The Joule roadmap continues to deliver new use cases with the goal of supporting 80% of the most used SAP business transactions by 2025.

Joule is only available to customers of SAP’s cloud applications and via RISE with SAP and GROW with SAP. It is not available for on-premise customers. As of September 2024, Joule is available with SAP SuccessFactors, SAP Start, SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, SAP Customer Data Platform, SAP BTP cockpit, SAP Build Code, SAP Product Lifecycle Management, SAP Asset Performance Management, SAP Digital Manufacturing, and SAP Integrated Business Planning.
