Digitalizing and standardizing global HR and talent management practices

As a global leader in the field of automation, OMRON Corporation aspires to empower people through automation. The company operates a wide range of businesses, including control equipment centered on factory automation, electronic components, social systems such as automatic ticket gates, and power conditioners for solar power generation and healthcare.

With operations in 120 countries across the globe, OMRON’s dedication to improving people’s lives and contributing to a better society through its business has a heritage spanning 90 years. As an employer, the company supports its employees to reach their potential, providing strong and enriching career paths and keeping them engaged and excited about the company’s ambitions.

The company’s HR systems had grown over time, creating a disparate HR system landscape that presented a challenge to OMRON in realizing its aspirations. With data distributed across a number of nonintegrated systems, the company relied on manual and time-consuming processes to visualize and analyze global employee data. And without modern and standardized digital HR processes connecting its talent management practices and the employee lifecycle, OMRON was limited in providing self-motivated career development opportunities for its people.

One of the factors influencing our decision to invest in SAP SuccessFactors HCM is SAP’s standing as a global organization with a proven reputation for industry-leading technologies and continued investment in enhancing its solutions so that they are in sync with future requirements and trends.

Aligning HR management with global business direction

With strategic aspirations for a universal talent strategy, OMRON sought a global HR management system integrated with its business operations. After evaluating a number of solutions, the company made the decision to invest in SAP SuccessFactors HCM.

OMRON liked the future-ready capabilities of the SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central solution and the SAP SuccessFactors Compensation solution to centralize employee compensation management.

To maximize employee engagement, OMRON adopted the SAP SuccessFactors Performance & Goals, SAP SuccessFactors Succession & Development, and SAP SuccessFactors Learning solutions. These integrated solutions give the company digitalized and connected people management processes for performance and goals management, personal development planning, succession planning, and learning.

Jing Yin, OMRON’s global HR strategy manager, adds, “Needless to say, cost was an important factor in our decision. And we also had the opportunity to meet other customers to get real testimonials that resonated with us, giving us confidence that the solutions were the right choice for OMRON globally.”

Using SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central, we have mitigated the need for manual monthly and quarterly data input efforts from our local HR teams and can now automatically generate reports whenever required with access to global workforce data.

Empowering employees to own their career development aspirations

Thanks to the integrated HR solutions, the company has eliminated the use of spreadsheets for HR reporting, enabling its global workforce report to be automatically generated from its global instance of SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central.

Likewise, the company has mitigated the manual effort involved in printing and distributing paper forms for performance management, liberating the HR team from these tasks with SAP SuccessFactors Performance & Goals. In addition, with visibility and planning capabilities to support future growth, OMRON’s HR team now avoids the need to manually prepare, record, and disseminate learning records or maintain siloed succession planning files.

With HR team members freed from performing manual tasks, they can now focus on developing strategic HR capabilities. By empowering its people to self-serve training and career planning information with SAP SuccessFactors Learning and SAP SuccessFactors Succession & Development, OMRON enabled its employees to own their personal and career development aspirations. And using SAP SuccessFactors Recruiting allows its people to find internal career opportunities listed across the globe. “It’s also much easier for our employees to apply for and manage their own training and development activities,” says Yin. “And long-term and short-term performance management processes and conversations are now more fruitful and linked to employee career paths, increasing employee engagement and helping us build on our positive workplace culture.”

In the long run, we aim to use SAP SuccessFactors HCM to unleash our human capital potential through talent visualization. This is becoming one of our key business strengths as we continue to create more opportunities to improve lives and contribute to a better society.

Maximizing strong and enriching career path opportunities for employees

Thanks to its adoption of SAP SuccessFactors HCM, OMRON’s performance and goals planning cycle is now more aligned with global competency requirements. Using standardized digital processes across all regions, the company is in a strong position to support ongoing staff development in line with its commitment to providing employees with a strong and enriching career path.

The company has also aligned talent management and succession planning with SAP SuccessFactors Succession & Development, helping it better prepare for workforce disruptions. And with one learning foundation to conduct and track mandatory training activities, such as compliance training, the team at OMRON can view specific data on training by simply running a report. In addition, with the launch of its global career Web site, the company has enabled visibility across global job openings in the company, expanding the reach of its recruiting activities.

And with more visibility into its global workforce data, OMRON can maximize the potential for greater diversity, equity, and inclusion while helping realize its workers’ career aspirations.
